OUR PROGRAMS

iSTEAM is an academic program designed for grades K-5 to increase their exposure to innovation and creativity in the STEAM disciplines. iSTEAM addresses the need to increase underrepresented minority students in the STEAM workforce by inspiring, motivating, supporting, and creating student interest in STEAM at the secondary level.

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

Computer Science/Technologyprovides a platform for collaboration and communication, which was impossible years ago. Students will initially learn the basics, such as troubleshooting, properly backing up and maintaining a personal device. Students will begin to learn about the real potential of the device. Laptop computers also offer a superb platform for the use of software for content creation, combining a camera, research portal, word processor, and media editor in one small package. Students will learn how to use these tools effectively not only for this course, but also for the use of appropriate apps and programs for classes that allow for both creating and consuming relevant course content. The all participants will also participate in cross-curricular projects that involve advanced technological learning. Students will learn how to change existing content, as well as bring their own ideas to life using digital media tools. Our goal is to ensure that students understand the fundamental principles behind creating and editing graphics, illustrations, and photographs, and that they can engage in these activities skillfully and productively, regardless of the specific software they use.

ENGINEERING

iSTEM’s unique Engineering Design (ED) course curriculum will be developed in partnership with faculty from Local Science Center and will expose students to an integrated learning approach to connect engineering design and community problem solving

ARTS

The performing Arts program will expose students to a creative process that will develop their expressive theatrical talent and poise as students express their thoughts and feelings through dance, drama, music and visual arts. The Arts program will be developed in partnership with  I Am A Woman of Power Inc. and will be intended to inspire students to using performing arts to broaden imagination as students find their creative voices and are presented with the challenges and enjoyment of the artistic process. Our performing arts integrated curriculum is an exciting combination of courses and wide-ranging extracurricular activities, all of which build skills and persuade students to exercise their artistic talents. We believe there should be a strong emphasis and exposure to performing arts, and active participation in the arts is fundamental to iSTEAM’s mission. The Arts is fundamental for teaching students how to look at the world through artistic eyes; as students investigate their historical and cultural backgrounds through various periods of historical significance.

MATHEMATICS

The Mathematics sequence is aligned with Georgia State Standards. Mathematical learning in the iSTEAM program is designed to lead students to be more independent in both theoretical and practical applications; mathematical reasoning to solving real-world problems. Classes will focus on analytical and synthetic problem-solving skills while continuing to build mechanical expertise. Emphasizing logical reasoning and teamwork while incorporating algebraic and geometric techniques will afford students the opportunity to apply those techniques to
relationships between quantities and reasoning with equations and linear relationships. Our curriculum is design to help develop mathematical confidence in our students and to foster the kinds of skills they will rely on for the rest of their lives.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO KEEP OUR PROGRAMS GOING!

There is a need for a STEAM program to help prepare elementary school students for middle/high school and beyond. Most students are not afforded the opportunity to participate in STEAM programs.
“In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past” (National Science Foundation).
